Scalable, Course-Aligned, Pedagogy-Driven AI Support
AI-Enabled Personalized Engineering Education
Smart Tutor is an AI-enabled tutoring platform designed to support personalized engineering education at scale. It integrates large language models, course-specific knowledge bases, and evidence-based learning strategies to guide students through structured problem solving and build deeper conceptual understanding.
Built to enhance student success in engineering education
Smart Tutor takes a student-centered approach to personalized learning. It is designed to be available when students need help, adapt its support to different learners, reinforce course objectives, and support the development of critical thinking, self-regulation, and independent problem-solving skills.
The broader initiative focuses on AI-enabled personalized engineering education that supports both student learning and instructional decision-making.
What makes Smart Tutor different
  • Grounded in verified course materials instead of generic web-scale responses
  • Guides students through reasoning and feedback rather than simply giving answers
  • Surfaces patterns in misconceptions and knowledge gaps for instructors
  • Designed for reuse across engineering, STEM, and structured training settings

Representative student feedback
AI Tutor has been really helpful in terms of guiding me in solving the problems. Often times I’m unsure if I’ve approached it correctly and it’ll make suggestions on what I can improve. It’s also really good at catching arithmetic mistakes that I’ve made. I also like that I can compare my answers so that I have the ability to redo the problems with their feedback.
I really loved using the AI tutor and it felt super efficient knowing that the info it gives me is very accurate since it is based off of the actual problem and solutions. Being able to check my answers immediately and receiving a list of common errors if it is wrong makes it really useful to learn from my mistakes on the spot.
Overall, I think AI Tutor is extremely helpful and it will be great if more classes implement it.
